How oxytocin makes men loyal?

Love hormone oxytocin :

Love hormone oxytocin that makes men loyal is studied here briefly. We attribute many virtues to oxytocin, this hormone produced by the brain: it would contribute to the attachment of parents for the child, to love or even promote social relationships.

New research shows that it also tends to make men more loyal:

This is not a potion of love , but we approach it maybe. The oxytocin , a hormone known for its role in attachment and socialization, promote monogamy.

We already know that this is the case with the prairie vole and a German study from the University of Bonn  shows that the same is true for the human species .

The background: love hormone oxytocin

It is not romantic but love could be born in the hypothalamus . This small gland lost in the middle of the  brain  is located at the interface of the nervous system and the endocrine system .

In particular, it regulates appetite and sexuality, but that’s not all: it secretes oxytocin, the hormone of love, attachment and socialization .

Within a couple, it promotes the bond that unites the two protagonists. During childbirth , it is produced by both parents, and could facilitate the strong bond that unites the mother to the child, some scientists specifying that it would also contribute to the maternal instinct.

It plays other roles on a daily basis since it facilitates social relationships. It is even tested as a  treatment against shyness , promoting  self-confidence  and even gives courage.

In the prairie vole, oxytocin contributes to the  fidelity  and solidity of the couple, as was demonstrated in  2001 . German scientists wanted to see if it was the same for our species. But from  rodents to humans , there is sometimes a difficult gap to cross.

The researchers’ hypothesis, revealed in  The Journal of Neuroscience , suggests that men with high levels of oxytocin would tend to be closer to a pretty woman. This is the case … only for singles. The  male  couple, they prefer to keep their distance.

Oxytocin that makes men loyal

The study: the man in a couple who runs away from pretty women

Fifty-seven male volunteers were recruited for the experiment. All declared themselves heterosexual. Some were in a relationship with a woman, others were not.

Part of the volunteers received an injection of oxytocin with a nasal spray, the others inhaled a  placebo . Forty-five minutes later a meeting was arranged with a pretty  woman , who came to stand 60 cm from them.

This last detail is important because unconsciously, we establish with others what is called a social distance.

It is ideal for chatting or walking with someone, but if you break it and reduce it by entering too much into intimacy, a feeling of discomfort can arise.

Except in the case of a flirt or a romantic relationship, where these criteria are revised downwards.

However, in the case of this experience, the social distance has been crossed, the two subjects are very close. This did not bother either the  men  in the control group or the singles, the experimenter having been found attractive.

On the other hand, men in couples on oxytocin, who also found the woman  attractive , confessed to feeling uncomfortable and fell by 10 to 15 cm on average. The hormone makes it sociable but does not promote the rapprochement between the bodies.

The outside eye: loyalty for healthier babies

For the authors of this work, men and voles of the male prairies therefore share a common aspect: oxytocin promotes in them the taste for monogamy.

The temptation had no hold on them since they fled. In addition to being considered the hormone of love, attachment and socialization, it would now become the hormone of  loyalty .

By digging further, we can wonder about the usefulness of such a process in our species. Why do we need to maintain monogamy, which is far from being an absolute rule in the  animal world  ?

The authors have their own idea:

by remaining faithful to a woman, the man contributes to the education and protection of children, giving them more chances of surviving a hostile world.
