The cathode is the electrode from which the electric current flows . The other electrode is called the anode. Keep in mind that the classic definition of current describes the direction in which a positive electric charge moves, when most of the electrons are real currents. This can be confusing, so the mnemonic CCD for cathode current can help strengthen the definition. Usually the current flows in the opposite direction to the movement of the electrons.

Cathode history

The word “cathode” was coined in the year 1834 by William Whewell. It comes from Greek word kathodos, which means “descent” or “descent” and refers to the setting sun. Michael Faraday had consulted Whewell for naming ideas for an article he was writing on electrolysis. Faraday explains that the electric current in an electrolytic cell travels through the electrolyte “from East to West, or, which will strengthen to help memory, the one in which the sun seems to move.” In an electrolytic cell, the current leaves the electrolyte on the west side (moving outward). In an electrochemical cell , the cathode is an electrode at which reduction occurs . The cations are attracted to the cathode. Generally, the cathode is the negative electrode in an electrolytic cell undergoing electrolysis or in a recharging battery.

Is cathode positive or negative in galvanic cell or discharge battery ?

In a discharge battery or a galvanic cell , the cathode is the positive terminal.

In this situation, the positive ions move from the electrolyte to the positive cathode, while the electrons move inward to the cathode. The movement of electrons towards the cathode (which carry a negative charge) means that the current leaves the cathode (positive charge). Thus, for the Daniell galvanic cell, the copper electrode is the cathode and the positive terminal. If the current is reversed in a Daniell cell, an electrolytic cell is produced, and the copper electrode remains the positive terminal, but becomes the anode.

Is cathode positive or negative in vaccume tube or cathode ray tube?

In a vacuum tube or a cathode ray tube, the cathode is the negative terminal. This is where the electrons enter the device and continue into the tube. A positive current leaves the device.

In a diode, the cathode is indicated by the pointed end of an arrow symbol. It is the negative terminal from which the current flows. Even if current can flow in both directions through a diode, the name is always based on the direction in which current flows most easily.

Mnemonics will remember the cathode in chemistry

In addition to the CCD mnemonic, there are other mnemonics to help identify the cathode in chemistry:

  • AnOx Red Cat represents oxidation at the anode and reduction at the cathode.
  • The words “cathode” and “reduction” both contain the letter “c”. The reduction occurs at the cathode.
  • It may be useful to associate the “cat” in the cation as an acceptor and “an” in the anion as a donor.
