The covalent bond represents a particular type of chemical bond . It is almost axactly  to the bond between two atoms.

Generally nonmetallic, resulting from the pooling of electrons coming separately from each of them.

 Thus, each atom gains in electrons.

Covalent bonds and electron pairs:

The electrons involved in a covalent bond form pairs or doublets of binding electrons.

Single covalent bond:

The atoms when share one doublet we speak of single covalent bond

Double covalent bond:

The atoms when share two doublets, we speak of double bond.

Triple covalent bond:

When they share three doubles we speak of triple bond.

Examples: hydrogen and carbon

For example, the hydrogen atom can establish only a single covalent bond and the carbon atom can establish up to four.

 In the ethylene (C 2 H 4 ), the two carbon atoms are bonded to each other by a double bond and each to two hydrogen atoms by a single bond.

Normal covalent bond:

The covalent bonds are formed between atoms having a limited electronegativity difference.

The  covalent bond is called  to be “perfect normal” when it is established between two atoms of the same electronegativity as is the case for chlorine (Cl 2 ).

A covalent bond is called to be “polarized normal” when it is established between two atoms of different electronegativity, as is the case for hydrochloric acid or hydrogen chloride (HCl).

Covalent bond and geometry:

Unlike ionic bonds , the covalent bonds are directed. Thus, the atoms that pair by covalent bonds adopt characteristic forms that allow them to minimize electrostatic repulsions .

molecule formed of four binder doublets will therefore take a tetrahedral form and a molecule formed of two binder doublets will adopt, in the case of a double bond a linear form.

Properties of covalent compound :

The important properties of covalent compound are as follows :

1.The melting point of covalent compound is low.

2.The boiling point of covalent compound is low.

3.They are non conductors of heat and electricity.
