Oxygen cycle an overview is given below. The oxygen cycle is the cycle that helps transport oxygen through the three parts of the Earth, the atmosphere, the biosphere, and the lithosphere (the Earth’s outer shell).
The atmosphere is of course the area of gases that lies above the surface of the earth and is one of the largest free oxygen tanks on Earth.
The biosphere is the totality of the terrestrial ecosystem. The biosphere also has some of the free oxygen produced from photosynthesis and other biological processes.
The largest oxygen store is the lithosphere. Most of the oxygen in this layer does not move alone or is not free, but is part of chemical compounds such as silicates and oxides.
The atmosphere is in fact one of the smallest sources of oxygen on Earth, as it contains only 0.35% of the total oxygen on Earth, and the smallest amount comes from the biosphere.
As mentioned earlier, the largest amount is in the Earth’s crust. The oxygen cycle is how to stabilize or release oxygen in each of these major areas.
Oxygen is released into the atmosphere by a process called photolysis, which is when high-energy sunlight breaks down oxygen-carrying molecules to produce free oxygen.
One of the most common photolysis processes is the ozone cycle.
Ozone cycle :
In ozone cycle the oxygen molecule O2 is divided into atomic oxygen by ultraviolet radiation from the sun’s rays. This free oxygen then binds again with the existing O2 molecules to form (O3) or what we call ozone.
This cycle is important because it helps protect the earth from harmful UV rays and convert them into harmless heat before they reach the Earth’s surface.
Photosynthesis and respiration :
The main courses in the biosphere are breathing and photosynthesis.
Respiration is when humans and animals breathe by consuming oxygen for use in the metabolism and release of carbon dioxide.
Photosynthesis is the opposite of this process and is mainly performed by plants and plankton.
The oxygen in the lithosphere is generally attached to minerals such as silicates and oxides.
Most of the time, this process is done automatically, all it takes is for the pure form of the element to rub with the oxygen, just like what happens when iron rusts.
Chemical weathering :
Part of the oxygen is released by chemical weathering. When the mineral-containing minerals are exposed to other elements, a chemical reaction breaks down the mineral and during that process, free oxygen is produced.
These are the main oxygen cycles and each of them plays an important role in helping to protect and sustain life on Earth.
