One of my self-improvement projects was trying to learn to write legibly. It would be easy to blame my writing for being left-handed, but it probably has a lot more to do with quick writing rather than cleanliness. So, I have a pen and ink and I’m training.

Ink is one of  practical contributions of chemistry. You can make inks and tattoo inks invisible in addition to writing and drawing inks.

Although ink recipes can be well-kept secrets, the basic principles of ink preparation are simple. You want to mix the pigment with a carrier (usually water). It helps to include a chemical that will allow ink to flow smoothly and adhere to paper (gum arabic). Here are some easy ink recipes to help you make the ink yourself:

Permanent black ink recipe

  •  black lamp 1/2 teaspoons (which you can buy or can do by holding a plate on a candle and collecting soot or collecting other char)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon of gum arabic
  • 1/2 cup of honey

Mix egg yolk , gum arabic and honey. Incorporate the black lamp. This will produce a thick paste that you can store in a sealed container. To use the ink, mix this paste with a small amount of water to obtain the desired consistency.

Brown ink recipe

  • 4 teaspoons loose tea or 4-5 tea bags
  • 1 teaspoon of gum arabic
  • 1/2 cup of boiling water

Pour boiling water over the tea.

Let the tea brew for about 15 minutes. Squeeze as much tea (tannin) as possible tea or tea bags. Stir in gum arabic. Filter the ink and allow it to cool before bottling.

Prussian blue ink recipe

  • Prussian blue pigment (sometimes sold as laundry blue)
  • water

Mix the pigment in the water to obtain a rich blue ink.

Unless you have a calligraphy pen, the easiest way to use these inks is with a homemade feather or brush. If you have recipes for the inks you want to share, feel free to post them.
