A new British study questions the much-praised virtues of omega-3 fatty acids. Its authors identified 15,159 studies on the subject, of which 89 were considered to be sufficiently robust . If the use of omega-3 does not seem to be harmful to health, the team of researchers nevertheless concludes that  “omega-3 fats have no definite effect on total mortality, cardio events – combined vascular or cancer ” .

Considered essential to human health, oils containing omega-3 cannot be produced by the body:

They must therefore be consumed. Advertising has taken hold of omega-3 oils and is actively promoting their health benefits. Many of these allegations have a dubious scientific origin. The role of omega-3s on mental functions, for example, is very controversial. Their beneficial effect on the heart was, however, generally accepted. This new study, published in the  British Medical Journal , challenges these health benefits.

In recent years, the use of fish oils, particularly those rich in omega-3, has been associated with a myriad of health benefits, ranging from improved heart function to increased memory, even intelligence .

Meta analysis of studies of omega-3s:

 The team, led by Professor Lee Hooper, from the University of East Anglia, conducted a meta-analysis of studies of omega-3s.

It emerges from his work that the effects of omega-3 are contradictory. Most studies have found a negligible or slightly positive effect. In 1989, a study known as DART (for  diet and angina randomized trial , that is to say randomized trial diet and angina pectoris ) had however noted that omega-3 had, at most, a slightly harmful effect.

The DART study had in fact established that the highest number of sudden cardiac deaths was observed in a group taking an omega-3 supplement in the form of capsules, while  “omega 3 from fatty fish have effects different from those of fish oil supplements, without [the DART study], having examined this aspect, being able to incriminate it to explain the differences “ , leaving the mystery hovering over the root cause of this anomaly .

Researchers think it would be important to distinguish between the types of heart disease , between patients with angina and those suffering from an acute myocardial infarction ( heart attack ) for example. And to conclude that there is  “no solid proof that omega-3 fats protect against cardiovascular events”, but that “it is probably not appropriate to recommend a large intake of omega -3 to individuals suffering from angina pectoris but who have never suffered a myocardial infarction ” . The team also  did  n’t find any evidence that omega-3 fats had an effect on.

The wide discrepancy between studies – mode of administration of omega-3, amounts and types – was the main problem to overcome for researchers, who finally concluded:  “Our results do not eliminate the major hypothesis effects of omega-3 fats on total mortality, since solid trials with only a low risk of distortion report a limited number of deaths. There is no evidence that the source (diet or supplementation) and dose of omega-3 fats had any impact on the effectiveness of long chain omega-3 fats . 

The damaging effects of omega-3s:

The damaging effects of omega-3s found in one study could be attributed to the levels of pollutants in fish. Fish populations are declining and pollutants such as mercury and dioxin- like chemicals in fish are increasing. Long-term exposure to pollutants in fish may outweigh the benefits of omega-3. The only way to sort this out is to do more studies on the health effects of omega-3s and fish.

Alternative sources of omega-3 Fatty acids :

Alternative sources of omega-3 fatty acids, from krill for example, will soon be commercially available. American scientists recently created genetically modified pigs that synthesize their own omega 3.  “We were able to use these animals as models to observe the repercussions on the heart health of an increase in levels of omega-3 in the body. “ Said Dr. Randy Prather of the University of Pittsburgh.

The European Union has funded numerous projects on omega-3 fatty acids, including a study on the production of omega-3 fatty acids and its applications in the food industry, and a project on eggs hen containing omega-3.
