Renewable Energy sources:

Renewable Energy sources a brief description of this source is listed here in relation with nitrogen.Nitrogen has become an attractive option as a source of renewable energy, as it is the most abundant gas in the Earth’s atmosphere.

However, the structure of nitrogen gas made of two nitrogen atoms bonded together by a covalent triple bond, which never breaks under normal conditions, presents a great challenge for scientists who want to convert this chemical energy in the nitrogen triple bond into electrical energy.

In its April 13th issue, the Chinese newspaper “Chem” published a scientific paper in which researchers presented a new method to capture atmospheric nitrogen that could be used in the manufacture of batteries.

To prove the hypothesis, the chemical reactions that feed the currently available lithium-nitrogen batteries are reversed. Instead of generating energy by re-generating lithium nitride (2Li3N) into nitrogen and lithium gas, the researchers’ battery model would consume atmospheric nitrogen in ambient conditions to react with lithium forming lithium nitride. .

The power produced by this battery is not that great, but is similar to that produced by lithium metal batteries.

Researcher Xin-Bo Zhang, from the Zhang Chan Institute of Chemical Applications of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, says:

“This research is promising for correlated nitrogen battery systems, not only for supporting the fundamental and technological development of the energy storage system, but also for producing an advanced nitrogen fixation and reversal cycle N2 / Li3N (conversion from nitrogen to lithium nitride and back).

He added, “The work is still in its early stages, and a lot of efforts must be made to develop battery systems.”
