What is a Chemical Bond?

The ” chemical bond ” was a term first used by Gilbert Newton Lewis  in the year 1920 in an article to explain why atoms come together to form substances and also why they bind for thousands of years.

Types of chemical bond

there are two common types of chemical bonds such as:

  • Ionic bond
  • Metallic bond

Ionic bond

There is definitive transfer of electrons from one atom to another. This type of bonding occurs between metal atoms (which have a tendency to lose electrons to become stable) and hydrogen atoms, not metals and semimetals (which have a tendency to gain electrons to become stable).

An example is  sodium chloride  (NaCl – table salt) where sodium is a metal that has a tendency to lose an electron, while chlorine is a nonmetal that has a tendency to gain an electron.

In this way, sodium gives an electron to chlorine, forming a salt, a very stable substance.

Since ions are formed, which are chemical species with opposite charges (+ and -), one ion attracts a nearby one and ionic groups with a large number of ions are formed, just like the crystals that table salt possesses.

Metallic bond

It is a theory that says that metals (such as aluminum, gold, silver, copper, etc.) are formed by a group of neutron atoms and cations that are held together by a kind of free electron “ cloud ” (electrons that were lost in the formation of the mentioned cations).

That cloud (or sea) of electrons would function as a metallic bond that would hold the atoms together.

The importance of chemical bond

Chemical bonds form everything around us.

This is because the bonds join the molecules to form more compound molecules, without the bonds, for example, the oxygen we breathe would not exist, which is nothing less than 2 oxygen molecules together, linked by chemical bonds.

Without them, simple molecules could never form complex functions like life.

Chemical bonds can occur through the  gain or loss of electrons between atoms  (ionic bond), as an example NaCl (sodium chloride).

Ionic compounds conduct electricity in a liquid or dissolved state. They usually have a high melting point and a high boiling point.

Another type of chemical bond is through the exchange of electrons: the  covalent bond , such as H2O (water).

There is also the metallic bond where the electrons of the last layers of the metal atoms jump and move freely between the atoms creating a force of attraction between the atoms of the metal, in this case, there is no loss of electrons.
