Installation of electricity production using so – called nuclear energy , present in the nuclei of atoms . This energy comes from the strong force (one of the four known forces, or interactions, of the universe , along with gravity , the electromagnetic force, and the weak force ). This force ensures the cohesion of the nuclei of the atoms.

Two principles exist to recover a – small – part of it:

The destruction, or fission of a heavy nucleus ( uranium , plutonium ), or the fusion of a very light element ( hydrogen or one of its isotopes, deuterium or tritium).


Fission is used in atomic bombs (“A bombs”) and in nuclear power plants.


Fusion is used in hydrogen bombs (“H bombs”), also called thermonuclear.

 Fusion is also the source of the heat of the stars and sun . We are trying to develop its operation in future power stations. The Iter program ( International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor ) is part of this research.

A conventional nuclear power plant contains one or more nuclear reactors, where energy is produced, in the initial form of heat, and a set of systems ensuring the conversion of this heat into electricity.

In the reactor, once the reaction has started, it is self-sustaining because the broken nuclei emit neutrons which break up the neighboring nuclei.

This is the ” chain reaction “, which is mastered by descending control bars ( metal ) which absorb some of the neutrons. The conversion of the heat produced into electricity is carried out in the same way (in principle) as in a coal or petroleum power plant. Heating the water produces steam that turns a turbine, which generates electricity.The yield varies between 30 and 40%.

The electrical powers produced are often of the order of 1,000 megawatts. In France, the production units (or units) are standardized, producing 900 MWe ( e for electricity), 1,300 MWe or 1,450 MWe.

The power stations are distinguished by many technical choices: the fuel (natural or enriched uranium, plutonium), the moderator (the fluid which maintains the reaction in the core, which can be ordinary water, heavy water or graphite ), the heat transfer fluid (water, pressurized water, heavy water, carbon dioxide , sodium ). The water circuit can be single or double.

Today, the most widely used technique is pressurized water, or PWR (  Pressurized Water Reactor ), with pressurized water as a moderator and as a coolant. The fuel is enriched uranium.

The whole process leads to the production of waste , one tenth of which has long-lived radioactivity , which requires complex treatment and storage.
